Hacienda Yaxcopoil is an historic Yucatan landmark that embodies the grandeur of the 17th century Spanish colonial era and the 19th century henequen boom in authentic detail.
Located 20 miles south of Merida, is a favorite tourist destination for those exploring the Hacienda Route, the Puuc Route and the Mayan ruins at Uxmal.
Hacienda
Yaxcopoil has been the location of several film and television productions, and is featured in most travel guides. Its archives are frequently cited in historical texts and research. Hacienda Yaxcopoil may be the best preserved but unrestored hacienda in the Yucatan.
Situated on 33.9 acres, Hacienda Yaxcopoil currently operates as a museum of hacienda and Mayan history, featuring original machinery used for henequen processing and Mayan artifacts discovered on the grounds.
The Casa Principal compound includes the main building, with several large salas, bedrooms, and a chapel, as well as a Mayan museum, snack bar, gift shop, and several smaller quarters, some serving as dressing rooms for the pool.
The Casa de Visitas has been beautifully restored to accommodate guests. The Casa de las Maquinas, Taller (Factory Building) and Bodega (Warehouse) all have exquisite façades. The grounds include gardens and orchards, much of which are still irrigated with the original system of aqueducts or caños.
Rarely in the Yucatan is a property of this importance offered to the public. The majority of Yucatan haciendas are held for generations and usually transferred through private arrangements. If you are interested in leasing this Yucatan legacy, contact the owner at hacienda@yaxcopoil.com.
